OPTION: DISTRICT OF LAKE COUNTRY’S MICRO-HYDRO PROJECT TOUR

Lake Country’s Micro-Hydro Project began producing and supplying power into the BC Hydro grid in June 2009 using infrastructure created on its drinking water and irrigation supply system. Unlike traditional hydroelectric facilities, this plant diverts the flow from the pipe transmitting water downhill to the community. At the generating station the natural force of gravity creates the energy required to spin the electricity-generating turbine, the water then leaves the generating station and is placed in the community water supply reservoir ready for use. The 1.1 MW micro-hydro project cost $4.1 million and is expected to produce 3,871 megawatt hours (MW.h) of power annually, enough to supply 400 homes and generate annual revenues of $367,000.

SIGN-UP: Before noon Monday, February 27th at the Fresh Outlook Foundation booth.

BUILDING SUSTAINABLE COMMUNITIES TOGETHER...ONE LEGO BRICK AT A TIME

Bringing creativity, exuberance, and the inspiration of play to the serious concerns of community sustainability, Lloyd Smith Solutions will lead participants in LEGO® Serious Play™. Delegates will have a ton of fun while unearthing and unleashing individual and community problem-solving potential. This pioneering process enhances participants’ insights and confidence by engaging them in hands-on, minds-on experience. The resulting teams and networks promise to be more creative, collaborative, and committed.

BUILDING SUSTAINABLE COMMUNITIES TOGETHER...CONTINUED

Participants will be given a list of 12 potential projects, one for each for the issues / sectors addressed during the morning session. They will select the project of their choice and work with sector-specific experts to “build” innovative solutions using LEGO®. Each project team will create a poster to explain its project approach; projects will be displayed during Day 2 of the conference.

The evening of Day 2 will feature a LEGO® building competition open to conference delegates and the public. Each team of eight will enjoy a bag supper while “constructing” a solution to a specific community sustainability challenge of its choice. Each team must include people from a variety of sectors, including elected officials, planners, infrastructure professionals, developers, educators, researchers, nonprofit representatives, and youth. There will be a sign-up sheet at the Fresh Outlook Foundation booth for conference delegates. Projects will be judged by delegates during Day 3. Members of the winning teams will receive great prizes!
